Service-Learning Approach
All local S-L projects and International S-L Expeditions (ISLE) will have to adopt the Service-Learning approach:
a) Pre-activity planning
The process should include identifying a real community need and determining the learning objective/s. Small groups can be formed to explore standing issues facing the community or requests to the college by other voluntary welfare organisations (real needs) can be taken up. Learning objectives may include the skills that students could pick up during their S-L project/s, a better understanding of the relationship between the community and themselves, or a change in their attitude towards certain social issues.
b) Conscious awareness of learning
Every student is encouraged to be aware of the learning points that they can or have picked up as they serve the community. Students are encouraged to journal their thoughts about their experiences and learning points such that they would be consciously observing their surroundings and be aware of learning opportunities. Through their involvement in S-L project/s, students will find themselves in situations that will require them to communicate effectively and efficiently with their team members, exercise sound decision-making techniques, manage their resources prudently, and so forth. Through the different stages of their S-L projects, students have the opportunities to transmit and manifest the college values namely Integrity, Resourcefulness, Resilience and Compassion.
c) Post-activity reflection
Reflection serves as a link between service experiences and learning from the experiences. Students should schedule their time to share their stories and reflect on issues such as lessons learned about themselves through experiencing the project, analyse their strengths and weaknesses, and even identify any underlying or overarching issues which influence their problem.
