International S-L

International Service-Learning Expedition:

International Service-Learning Expedition or, in short, ISLE, is an educational and experiential pedagogy that brings students beyond the shores of Singapore into new worlds. It is one that overthrows entrenched assumptions, stereotypes and preconceived notions of self, but also most importantly what service and learning are about. As cultures collide, individuals are challenged to re-examine their personal values and beliefs and everything dear to them in order to better appreciate Singapore and the world around them. In addition, it also certainly encourages young people not only to serve out of their comfort zones, but also to see the need to truly serve out of their perceived poverty.

Alternatively, ISLE also enlightens individuals to the truth that communities have so much to offer, and they in turn are enriched by a reciprocal relationship that have been carefully nurtured through service, humility and respect for communities so different from our own. Indeed, ISLE is a powerful tool that values the process more than the outcome and we, the Service-Learning Committee of NYJC believe that Service-Learning is all about the being and it is a transformative lifestyle that must be embraced passionately.

Note : NY believes in long term partnerships or relationships with our host communities in order to anchor deep and build into the community, and as such our commitment to a community usually spans 3 to 5 years. This is done in order that contributions will be sustainable and our service to the community will hopefully be long-lasting as we grow together with the community.
