Malaysia Trip 2009 (16.12.09-21.12.09)
Warning: Not for the weak-hearted or weak computers (Picture Heavy)
Writers' Note: Realise that this writeup is a little different from the rest as we wanted this to be informal so it will remind us of the fun we had there:D
On 16th December 2009, 57 members of Nanyang Junior College Symphonic Band (NYJCSB) left for Malaysia for a 6-day trip which includes a school exchange, a concert and performances in Genting Highlands.
Wait! Before we even go there, we should mention the packing process.
On the 15th December 2009….

“Our Repertoire for Band Trip”

“ Pack! Pack! Pack!”

“Read?! Read?! Read?!”

So much plastic!

Lin Hao: “Wrap Xinyu arh!”
And all sorts of fun you could have while packing! But, it was a tiring job for the QMs (Iris and Shuyi) as they go around taking stocks and labeling the items we are bringing over to Malaysia.
Finally, on the 16th December 2009, also known as Departure Day, NYJCSB members arrived in the Band Room bright and early for the trip.

If you see any suspicious looking items, please inform our staff. Thank you.

Bus Driver Uncle

Dan Hui: “Cute, cute President”
The first highlight of our trip is the exchange program with Seri Kemangan School on the 17th December 2009.

In their ‘hall’
We had sectionals at their classrooms upon arrival and following we had full band. Have you ever had band practice with 2 other schools? If you haven’t, be surprised by the size of the band!

Mr. Tan conducting the full band

Look, we weren’t kidding about the size
It was definitely a good experience playing with the 2 schools. But it didn’t stop there. The members from Seri Kemangan Band also performed 3 pieces including Adventure Tales of Professor Alex and Can’t Take My Eyes of You for us.

Their student conductor conducted!
Unfortunately, good time flies and soon it was time to bid goodbye. We had a great time with them and we definitely hope there will be a next time!

Seri Kembangan and NYJC Symphonic Band
18th December 2009 finally came and this was the day that we worked so hard for! Today was our concert day! We had a joint concert with Hin Hwa High School and Tsung Tsin High School at the premises of the Hin Hwa High School.
Before every successful concert, there are always rehearsals and we also had ours at Hin Hwa High School.

How could the clarinetists resist taking a photo?

After rehearsing, we are all hungry…
‘
The lunch we have all been waiting for!

“Someone: “Childish!”
Iris: “Fun what!” “
Finally, our big night!

The longest name belong to Nanyang Junior College Symphonic Band:D

Yes, it’s the main page’s photo!

Elias: “ We’re the new imba Korean boy band”

After a boy band, do we have another Korean Band forming?

NYJCSB on stage!
Even after the concert, the photo taking never stops.

“PEACE!”
The time we had on stage seem to fly past even though we played 3 encore pieces on top of our original four. Due to the great response from the audience, we had a extremely good time on stage.
The next day, we had to wake up early for our bus ride to Genting Highlands.
Everyone is tired…

But there’s Amelia who didn’t sleep! Till later at least (x
And were all awake for our stop at the petrol kiosk

DOUNTS :D
Then, we went up up up we went into Genting Highlands.
Looking at how cold it was, we wore our jackets and windbreakers,

Can you even imagine having to play under this weather condition?
And even tried to mimic scenes in dramas where you talk and see cold air coming out of your mouth!

Blowing away…

Felicia still looks sleepy

So does Mr. Desouza!

Everyone playing: “ name, number”
In the two days at Genting, we had four performances lined up for us. Each performance was different as a result of our constant improvisation.

Which piece were we looking at?

Percussionists on stand-by

The audience joined in and performed with us too!

Can you spot the audience among us?
On the 1st day in Genting, some of the members went to watch the Marching Band Competition, while some of us missed it.
For those we went, they saw,

The friendly mascot

Marching bands

and their moves
While for those we didn’t went had a “scrumptious” dinner!

Fried Rice..

Inside of the mall

The pretty decorations to match the festive season

Shopping too!
For the 2nd day at Genting, we had free tickets to Genting Highlands!

“Miss Toh, why so scared?”
And free time in between performances.

New endorser for Buskin Robbins: Forever 21 Mr. Tay
To top it all up, we even had buffet dinner :D

Who took so much food?
Taking the advantage of the nice atmosphere, we celebrated the birthdays of 5 people, namely the Bus Driver Uncle, Chi Jie, Nazreen, Joyce and Liyan!

During the six days, not only did the band members gain new experiences and became better performers, they also got to know each other better, creating stronger bonds with one another.
