Fort Siloso- Footsteps through the time tunnel

Sentosa is a beautiful island with mesmerizing beaches and glistening waters. It serves as a perfect vacation spot for frequent beach-goers. With numerous famous tourist destinations such as ‘The Merlion’ and ‘Sentosa Luge and Skyride’ etcetera springing up on this captivating island, it certainly makes Sentosa a definite MUST-SEE tourist destination.

However, amidst the light-hearted vacation atmosphere lays a historic site- the Fortress of Singapore. Fort Siloso, a quiet destination that lies on the Western tip of Sentosa (Siloso Point) was an integral location for Singapore’s defense during the World War 2, where the Japanese invaded Singapore. Fort Siloso’s serenity strikes a stark contrast to the bustling city life in Orchard, presenting a splendid memorabilia for visitors to learn about.

With its 100 year old history, Fort Siloso serves as an authentic period setting of the World War 2 presenting realistic images of Singapore’s past with its remarkable usage of audio and visual. The British built these fortresses to guard Singapore’s harbor with Fort Siloso as the sole surviving coastal fort. The fort consists of life size wax figurines which recreates a realistic scene during the war, giving visitors a better idea of the soldier’s living conditions and situation at that time.

Fort Fort Siloso consists of three zones, namely the ‘Red Zone’, ‘Yellow Zone’ and the ‘Blue Zone’.

The Red Zone provides an insightful walk exhibiting life size displays of guns above Tunnel B Complex and also featuring a heartrending exhibition of the Prisoners of War Art. History comes alive in ‘The Voices of Singapore’ where a war hero such as Lim Bo Seng is featured in Force 136-the brave confrontation fighters who devised jungle hideouts.

The yellow zone gives visitors an experience of a soldier’s life at Fort Siloso, one can catch a glimpse of the realistic displays here as the vivid pictures of the hardships of the soldiers are painted.

The image shows the Tailor shop trying their best to make ill-fitting and dirty uniforms of the soldier’s look as presentable as possible.

The blue zone has the largest and longest Tunnel complex of Fort Siloso. One is being guided to the 12 Pounder Quick Firing Gun and the Fire Direction Tower which offers a splendid bird’s eye view of the nearby islands of Sentosa.

Fort Siloso’s rich historic value will certainly etch fond memories in visitors who had visited the fort. It is also a meaningful experience which serves as an insightful journey for National Education.
