Asian Youth Games 2009: A reflection

In recent weeks, many have found themselves on the edge of their seat, watching anxiously for the results of the recently concluded Asian Youth Games. Apart from the obvious excitement surrounding the sporting events, much more had been planned by students from Singapore in order to make the games a holistic success. We even had volunteers from Nanyang Junior College lending a hand in this historical event of Singapore.

The inaugural Asian Youth Games took placed between the 29th of June to the 7th of July, a great honour for Singapore for being the first nation to host the prestigious games. Around 80 students from our college took part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Youth Games, leading the Parade of the Athletes.

It is no easy task for us placard holders and flag bearers, having sacrificed crucial days before our mid-year examinations to rehearse for the big day, putting on make-up, wearing heels and fitting into our uniforms. We did not have it easy during the rehearsals, having to continually walk up and down the seemingly never-ending steps of the Indoor Stadium, perfecting every little action, from the way we walked to how we smiled for the camera, many were exhausted by the end of the day.

Nothing could compare to the exhilarating opening day of the Asian Youth Games though, as we nervously awaited the athletes from our representative countries to arrive. Communication barriers aside, the athletes were more than eager to meet us locals, getting trigger-happy, snapping shots at every bend. Fear of tripping down the steps quickly vanished once we stepped on stage, making what seemed like an hour long parade around the grounds, soaking in all the cheers of the spectators and overall majesty of the occasion.

Sadly, the night quickly came to an end and we bade our goodbyes to the athletes. Though we had to forgo our holidays in preparation for this day, however, I believe I speak for all of us volunteers in saying that the Asian Youth Games was truly an unforgettable one, well-worth our sacrifices as we carry away not only wonderful memories but also friendships forged through the Asian Youth Games.
