Interview with Top Scholars of Graduation Batch ’08
6th March 2009 was the release of the ‘A’ level results for the 2008 batch of NYJCians. The two top scholars of the cohort, Ng Joo San of 0725 and Tan Zhi Ling of 0705, both managed to score a total of 7 Distinctions each. NYConneXions managed to get in touch with them to share their insights and study tips for the ‘A’ levels.
1. How do you feel being the top Scholar of the year? What are your study motivations?
JS: I’m quite elated and would like to take this opportunity here to thank my family and tutors especially my civic tutor, Mr. Lok. They are my sources of motivation together with some of my friends.
ZL: I felt a sense of relief after getting my results as I felt that I had done my parents proud. They are my source of motivation for I feared disappointing them if I did not archive good grades.
2. What do you credit your success to?
JS: It is important to be consistent, try not to live things to the last minute. Also the last lap is the most important; during the period leading up to the ‘A’ levels, one must still do plenty of revision and practices.
ZL: My teachers for being patient by not giving up on us and willing to repeat concepts we were unclear with.
3. What subject did you struggle with the most and how did you overcome it?
Both: GP!
JS: Read more and be more exposed to the current events around you.
ZL: Read your newspaper, better yet, bring it to school everyday. Also consult with your tutor.
4. Many students have problems balancing their CCAs with their studies. So how do you overcome that?
JS: I was from English Drama. I find that time management and consistency in studies is important. Take more initiative in both but achieve balance between the two as they are both equally important.
ZL: I was from ODAC. I feel that study is not about only academics. CCA is also very important for it is a form of stress relief to me. Also there are friends who encourage you there to push your limits.
5. What other tips would you give the current batch of students?
JS: Clarify your doubts whenever possible and do not give up easily.
ZL: Do your tutorials and give it all your best. Studying is not about comparing with others. Appreciate your tutors for they mean well.
In the interview, both scholars placed plenty of emphasis on the importance of consistent work and balance between academic and CCA. This is especially important advice to the current batch of J2 students with this being a SYF year as well as the training in preparation of the upcoming ‘A’ division games. Both agree that their tutors have played a major supportive role in their studies and advise referring to them on a regular basis. NYCX would like to take this opportunity to wish all JC2 students all the best in their endeavour towards quality grades.
