A Day to Appreciate and Enjoy: Teacher’s Day 2008

Mr. Sequeira

Teacher’s Day was celebrated on the last day of the term, right before the start of the September holidays. It was unlike any other day, with assembly starting at 0830 instead of the usual 0745. With the sweet sound of music blasting through the air, throngs of students made their way to the track and field area, where the two-hour long celebration would be held. Students gathered at the track for the pledge-taking ceremony before moving up to the grand stand and settling down in eager anticipation for the soon-to-start celebration.

The celebrations began with the grand entrance of the teachers. Many students craned their necks to get a better look at their teachers as they filed past them. Teachers from the science department stood out with the cheery, bright-green tees that they were wearing. Before long, the celebration was in full swing. First up was the game of tug-of-war. A battle of strength ensued between the teams as participants gritted their teeth and pulled the thick coarse rope with all their might in the hopes of emerging tops. Teachers and students alike had fun participating in games such as the eleven-legged and two-legged races, which required close cooperation among the participants.

The grey skies that had threatened to open up all along finally did so half-way into the celebrations. Thankfully, it was only a drizzle. But it was enough to send some students scrambling for the shelter of the atrium. Others who were bent on remaining in the stands but did not want to risk catching a cold took out umbrellas instead. Fortunately, the rain did not put much of a damper on the celebration. The lively hosts entertained the spectators with their on-going commentary of the games and read out messages dedicated to the teachers. At some point during the celebrations, an interactive game involving the spectators was played. Balls were thrown into the crowd and students had fun hitting the balls to one another.

The celebration ended a little earlier than expected and many students stayed behind to take photos with their teachers. As the saying by Helen Peters goes “Teacher appreciation makes the world of education go around.” On this special day, flowers and presents were given, dedications were made and heartfelt thanks were said. These were the little ways in which we, as students could possibly express our utmost gratitude.
