Puyal 2008: Acting up a storm
Cyclones are often associated with danger and destruction. Yet for NYJC’s Indian Cultural Society (ICS), it encapsulates the essence of their upcoming drama finals: wild yet exciting.
Puyal, according to ICS chairperson Sumaiyah, is an annual drama competition organized by NYJC ICS. It aims to allow students to discover the inner actor/actress in themselves while introducing them to Tamil drama and theatre. Mr. Thiru the CCA teacher-in-charge, hopes that ICS members pick up valuable organization, public relations, language and performing skills from planning Puyal.
This year’s Puyal is different in several ways. For one, the participants of the 2008 competition hail from secondary schools. Previously, only Junior Colleges took part in Puyal. “Hopefully, by participating in or watching Puyal, students would be motivated to join NYJC!” quipped Sumaiyah. The finalists performing this Saturday are from Cedar Girls’ School, Crescent Girls’ School and St Joseph’s Institution. Secondly, for the first time in the history of the competition, students of other races are involved in the making of Puyal. Matilda from 0730 is one such person. She is the artist behind this year’s brand new Puyal logo and will be acting this Saturday. Other non-Tamil/non-Indian students involved are Joanna, Marinah, Shahida and Balveen.
So, what’s this Saturday’s programme going to be like? ICS member Geetha says that each of the finalists would be performing a 15 minute skit. The winning school would receive the Championship trophy. The ICS would be putting up some performances too, including a dance for the finale. Our principal Mr Kwek, will be gracing the event.
It looks like Puyal 2008 is going to be a fun-filled, energy-charged event. Well, a blast (pun intended), more like it.
