LTC Best Camper: An Interview with Bernadet

Our interviewer with Bernadet(Right in orange)

This year's Leadership Training Camp (LTC) was held over the Youth Day weekend. Participants were treated to its Harry Potter theme, with highlights such as a Flying-Fox like activity where participants flew through the air on brooms. Participants were divided into 12 groups, of which 1 person in each group has the title of 'The Seeker' and among those 12 students, 2 were chosen as Best Campers to get the Order Of Merlin. Bernadet (Biz Club President) and Jamie (Student Council President) were the receivers of the Order of Merlin and have been presented with the opportunity to go for an Overseas OBS (Outward Bound Singapore) at the end of the year.

NYConneXions speaks to Bernadet for her take on the experience.

How was the LTC experience?
It was extremely fun and challenging. I got to know many friends from other CCAs and learned more about how I can lead my CCA better. I also got to do fun activities like dragon boating, kayaking, high elements and the night walk.

How did you feel about winning the title of Best Camper?
I was shocked at first and could not believe it. I’m very happy!

What do you think helped you to clinch the title?
I am not sure myself. On the third day of LTC, we had to self-rate ourselves on our leadership qualities such as teamwork, visionary and the like. In addition, we had our facilitators and three peers to rate us for our leadership qualities. I suppose that was how the winners were chosen. I believe that I was able to get the title because of my teammates (LUPIN), who were always there to support me and hence, after each day I was able to speak more and be open to my teammates, to be cheerful and enthusiastic as well. I learned a lot from them and because of them, I found the courage to do a capsize during the kayak session, to do rock climbing, abseiling and a lot more adventurous activities.

What have you been able to take away from LTC and how do you plan to use it to run your CCA?
I realized that teamwork and bonding among the CCA members are very important. Like during the camp, my group mates kept motivating each other so that almost all of us were able to overcome our fear of heights and water. Similarly, if the bond among Biz Club members becomes stronger, we can perform better as a team. I wish to organize CIP activities for my members as after joining business competitions and being the host for board game competitions for secondary school students, we don’t really have major activities.

In your opinion, what should a good leader be like?
A good leader should lead their members through examples. It is important to set a common goal for everyone, to always give words of encouragement and try to understand his or her members as well as to be willing to learn from failures.
