Training pays off for NY Judo

Reporter Chia Ling Xian, interviews the NY Judo team and gets to know a little more about the sport itself.

On 11 July, the NYJC Judo Team participated in the National Schools Judo Championships Team Event 2007. In preparation for this major competition, both the Girls’ and Boys’ teams have been training thrice a week on campus to sharpen their techniques and to build up their strength. Training sessions at external venues during the holidays also gave them greater exposure and confidence.

The atmosphere during the competition was tense. Competition from the other schools, especially RJC and HCI, was extremely tough. They were persistent in their moves, fast on their feet and their demeanor was intimidating. However the NYJC team fought fiercely and their efforts paid off with the Girls’ team emerging 2nd runner-up with a score of 3-1.

INSIDERS’ VIEW

This is what the NYJC Judo Team has to say:

"The whole team responded instantly when the referee announced victory to our side. Cheers of jubilation and ecstasy broke the initial nail-biting and solemn atmosphere in the RI multi-purpose hall. Tears flowed freely as we hugged one another.

Our glistening medals stand as testimony to the months of intensive and grueling training, which we had gone through. Although we did not manage to clinch the gold, we are glad to have done our best. This competition has not only allowed us to hone our skills but also strengthened the bond between team members. We will continue to strive for even better results next year and do the college proud.

Of course, this achievement would not have been possible without the consistent support and dedication from our coaches and tutors-in-charge. We would also like to thank the Photographic Society for coming down to support us."
