A missing best friend, an unknown little boy, a disconcerting truth… do these random dots connect somehow? In Part 1 of the Nanyang Film Festival series, NYconneXions meets the guys behind the film 'Recurrence', i.Nnovation’s first thriller. Shawn Goh, Dharma Sariwistono and Taufiq Bin Mohamed Rashid of 0727 share their acting experience with us.

Tell us more about your character in Recurrence.

Shawn: Shawn is a rather lost and confused fellow. He is quiet (in that in doesn’t have much to say in the film) and values his friends.

Taufiq: Your typical gangster who shouts at others for staring at his girlfriend. It’s a relatively minor role.

Dharma: Noel is a complicated person, in the sense that there is more to him than meets the eye.

Do you resemble your character in any way?

Shawn: We’re both afraid of ghosts and easily frightened!

Taufiq: Not really.

Dharma: Same here.

One of the main characters in the movie was played by a seven year old boy. What was it like working with him?

Dharma: He’s shy. And uncontrollable.

Taufiq: Rather defiant and rebellious. But he surprises us every now and then, especially when he adds his own touches to the film.

What has the experience in filming taught you?

Shawn: Proper time management is essential, especially since producing a good quality film requires more time.

Taufiq: I now know what it is like acting in a thriller. It’s pretty demanding.

Were there any funny moments?

Shawn: Once, while filming, I had to open a door but accidentally closed it instead. That was quite an anticlimax, considering that particular scene was supposed to be a serious one!

Taufiq: Whenever the boy did something unexpected!

Of course no film will be complete without the meticulous hard work of the production crew aka backstage people. However, this is not to say there is a team purely dedicated towards post-production. In fact, in i.Nnovation (I.Nno) with its scarce resources, it’s everybody for everything. This forces the club to be united, one for all, all for one.

The main guy in charge is Dickson Sim from 0603. As the managing director and former president of I.Nno, he oversees every aspect of film production. After all, there has to be a big cat around, or all the mice will play.

Ira from 0706, the production manager, is in charge of all logistics. She has to be the most resourceful person in the entire crew. She scouts location and ensures that all required equipment are on hand. On top of that, she still has to act as reserve camera operator, co-scriptwriter and set the schedules. Arguably, the next busiest person after Dickson.

Dharma, the creative director-cum-actor is the guy with ideas. His constant brain juice makes him the ideal candidate for developing the core of the script. And to make his presence felt in this film, he volunteered to play the role of Noel.

Not forgetting the chief editor, Taufiq. This visual effects specialist transforms all the raw footage from the cameras to what you see on-screen. With experience of video-editing in his secondary school days, he works wonders with the video-editing software.

The soundtrack and sound effects are the result of the hard work from the music department of I.Nno.
