Eye-spy and GET ED!

English Dept, organizers of Get Ed!

Organized by the English Department, the "Get Ed!" Crime & Punishment Seminar, held on 25 May, involved volunteer lecturers from the other academic departments in the college and several invited guest speakers as well. Students got a glimpse into the world of crime and punishment as they chose their own lectures to attend during the half-day Seminar.

Among the invited guests were representatives from the Law Society, SCORE, The Helping Hand, CNB, and even social activist, Mr Alex Au. They talked about what they do and how their professions relate to crime and punishment in the Singapore context. The tutors from the different departments in college offered perspectives of crime and punishment from the point of view of their different subjects. For example, biology discussed genetics and criminal behaviour; physics went behind-the-scenes on forensics; art showcased the value of graffiti; history exposed war crimes, and so on.

From these lectures, students got to observe and examine crime and punishment through a wide range of viewpoints, which brought what is usually a superficial GP topic to life in a very real way. Students were also grateful that this seminar provided crucial information, especially vital for tackling the GP mid-year exam the following day.
