The War Memorial Service

The Civilian War Memorial, located in the east of the Padang, was erected to remember the shared experiences and struggles of the major races of Singapore during World War II. It has four identical pillars rising more than 60 metres high, to symbolise these sad moments. The remains of the unidentified war victims are buried beneath the monument.

This year marks the 41st anniversary of the unveiling of the War Memorial at Beach Road.  The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) held the 41st War Memorial Service for the civilian victims of the Japanese Occupation on 15 February, which is also Total Defence Day.  The memorial service reminds the post-war generations that war is cruel, peace is valuable and total defence is important. As part of our efforts to promote holistic education, NYJC our NE Reps to attend this service. It was an important lesson revisited - we must ourselves defend Singapore; no one else is responsible for our security and well-being. As our college motto goes - this is my nation, Together We Build.
