Mathematics Week @ NYJC
From 31st Mar 2008 to 4th April, Nanyang JC celebrated its Mathematics Week. The week kicked off with the Statistics Poster Exhibition, which proved to be an innovative way for students to learn statistics, explore the relationship between electrical and water consumptions in relation to the number of people staying in a household and the type of household.  At the same time, it allowed the students to care for our environment and our country. The creative talents of NYJCians were strongly evident through the interesting designs for the posters. Besides, through this competition, students came to understand:

  • The strategic value of water.
  • The importance of energy conservation and the significant role that electricity plays in the everyday life of individual Singaporeans as well as in the country’s well-being and progress.
  • The importance of efficient use of electricity and alternative sources of energy.

Each poster was judged on these critieria: analytical and evaluative content, creativity and innovation, and organization and presentation. We are pleased to announce that the winning exhibits were from classes 0702, 0717 and 0725. At the same time, NYJCians were put to test with the daily mathematics quiz. Each day, an interesting mathematics question was placed on the Mathematics notice board and on TV Broadcast for students to solve. The objective of this segment of the programme was to stretch the talents of our students. The winner for the daily mathematics quiz was Zeng Fan Bin from 0725, who won for himself an IPOD Shuffle!

On 2nd April during the assembly period, our students were enthralled by our guest speaker Professor Chew Soon Hoe from the National University of Singapore. Professor Chew was an enthusiastic speaker sharing with the students his experience from his Singapore Tsunamis Warning System and how mathematics was used in the real world context. The interesting conclusion is that though Singapore is not likely to be hit by tsunamis, Singapore chooses to work closely with our neighbours to pursue an active engagement in the world of diplomacy and to maintain good relations. In the afternoon of 2nd April, our students were given a treat visit to the Singapore Meteorological Station to see more mathematics in application. Students were given a guided tour to view first-hand the sophisticated technology used in the station. Indeed, as Singaporeans, we are proud of our development and our progress.

On 3rd April, the Amazing Mathematics Race was conducted during the Common Lunch Period. It was heartening to see the competitive spirit shown as students from each team tried to outdo and outwit the other teams. The various teams stormed around the college to solve and tackle various problems posed to them at different stations. The values of unity, staying focused, determined and being well-prepared (with Graphic Calculators) were clearly evident in the winning teams from 0815, 0725, 0707 and 0818. It is encouraging to see such strengths exhibited by our students as these values form the very essence needed to mould our nation’s future. Staying united, determined and well-prepared, we shall build a bright future for ourselves. Viva NYJC! Majulah Singapore!
