Dialogue Session with Mr Chew

Our JC 2 students had the above
talk with Mr Chew Hock Yong, DS MCYS on the 7th Apr 2007,
Mr Chew addressed our students
on the Principles of Governance that Singapore has adopted.

Our students were
reminded how Singapore has transformed from colonial times
to present age. Mr Chew pointed out that internal and external
security are not to be taken for granted.

He added our country
focuses on economic growth, investment on human capital, good
social support, ensure racial and religious harmony, building
a secure environment and world-class efficient infrasture.

Our governing principles
include
- Reward for work,
work for reward
- Do what is right,
not what ideology dictates
- Do the right thing,
even if unpopular
- Anticipate change,
be in time for the future
- Incorruptibility
- Leadership is key

Also, Mr Chew mentioned
the challenges ahead
- Globalisation and
economic competition
- Greater income gap
- More structural
unemployment
- More elderly
- Families not as
strong

Mr Chew emphasized
that
+ Singapore is special
- vulnerable, yet a land of opportunity.
+ A small state that
needs to run ahead of our competitors.
+ We depend not just
on hardware and infrastructure but most importantly on software
- our people.
 
Summing up his talk,
Mr Chew pointed that whether or not we are successful in the
future, it depends on the young, it is up to them to make
us special.
