The Singapore Academy of Law Junior College Programme (SALJC) 2011 was a two-week programme held from 28th November to 9th December. Its aim was to allow students in junior colleges to learn more about the law practice in Singapore through presentations by practising lawyers, job-shadowing and visits to places of legal relevance (such as the Parliament House, the Supreme Court and the Subordinate Courts).
From 12 to 14 December 2011, a group of nine JC1 students, myself included, attended an enrichment programme, Science Focus 2011, at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The programme featured electives in the fields of biological, computing, physical, pharmaceutical and quantum sciences, leaving us spoilt for choice.
After a year’s worth of preparation, Team Luceat, comprising 23 students and teachers, embarked on an expedition to Cambodia for 13 days as part of a Service-Learning expedition during the December holidays. The team visited the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh as well as the Cheung Ek killing fields to learn more about the culture and history of Cambodia.
On 29 November 2011, our International Service-Learning Expedition Team Vivace comprising three Teachers and twenty-four students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Cebu, Philippines. For the past one year, our team bonded over intense team building sessions, facilitation and magic workshops, learning journeys to “Little Philippines” and “Little India” and local Service-Learning Projects, Our Team rendered service by building a fence and refurbishing the school’s library, having cultural exchanges at Bulak National High School, SOS Children’s village and Alaska Elementary School and also went on a historical learning journey around Cebu City.
The Nanyang Junior College Symphonic band embarked on a 6D5N trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 19th December to 24th December 2011 together with our DSA students and guest players.
On 13 December 2011, 25 ODACians and 19 NYJCians participated in the annual ODAC expedition – ODAC Pulau Ubin Adventure. The overnight expedition was organised by NYJC ODAC and was held at Pulau Ubin, one of the last remaining kampong villages in Singapore.
On the 29th of December 2011 (Thursday), our College’s Judo Team participated in the very first combined training session hosted by Raffles Institution. The other schools that participated were St Gabriel’s Secondary School and also Assumption English School. It was a useful platform for the judokas (judo players) to exchange pointers on Judo as well as to hone their skills in preparation for the National ‘A’ Division Championships next year.
