From its humble beginnings in 1987, the Nanyang Junior College Symphonic Band (NYJCSB) has grown from strength to strength to become the strong ensemble it is today.
Under the baton of Band Director, Mr Brando Tan, the Band clinched the Gold Award at the 2007 and 2009 biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging of Concert Bands.

NYJC Symphonic Band believes in bringing out the musicality in every Band member, and has since taken part in several concerts, public performances, and local and international exchanges.
Overseas exchanges include trips to Bangkok, Thailand (2006) and Osaka, Japan (2008) which have provided the Band opportunities to learn about different Band and music cultures that exist in the wider musical world.
The Band has held numerous public performances, most recently at the Opening Ceremony of Singapore’s Circle Line and Braddell-Heights’ National Day Observance Ceremony, graced by Members of Parliament and Ministers, like Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Mr. Teo Chee Hean and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, respectively.
NYJC Symphonic Band has also provided members with avenues to develop their leadership qualities when they played host to bands and orchestras of schools from countries like Malaysia and New Zealand.
The Band had also arranged for members to attend master classes for sections which, improved their knowledge and provided them with the chance to bring their skills to higher levels.
Also, not forgetting our Band’s biannual concerts which not only gave members the chance to perform regularly, but also the chance to showcase their music to their family and friends.
The band members have managed to exercise good time management skills, juggling between band practices and their academic results. Not only do our band members gain once in a lifetime opportunities, they also acquire important life skills like self-discipline and perseverance and make lifelong friends through camaraderie in music-making.
Together with our Band Director and Teachers in-charge, Nanyang Junior College Symphonic Band will continue our passion in music-making and strive for excellence in bringing great music to audiences.
