The "Tree House" Library: Exciting Children, Delighting Adults.

Directly above me on the building's main facade were intriguing rectangular windows resembling books protruding from a bookshelf. Walking into the cool interior of the new Bishan Community Library, I had the impression that I was entering a New Age tree house.

The protruding windows turned out to be reading "pods", created to provide more private spaces for readers, yet adding a touch of personality to the library at the same time. Such a facility that allows for quiet reflection isn't the only feature that sets this library apart from others.

The "Children’s Space" is a private realm that features caves to spur the imagination of children through exploration. Level four will particularly appeal to youths, with the "Young People’s Collection" certainly living up to its name. This section is devoted to comics, fiction, multimedia stations and a host of other materials that will definitely tantalize the interests of today's teens.

Officially opened on 1 September 2006, this new library is strategically located behind Junction 8 Shopping Centre and thus easily accessible by Bishan MRT Station. The Library aims to serve the general information and recreational needs of the community through massive collections of fiction, lifestyle, parenting and business-related topics.

And it sure doesn’t disappoint! With high-tech services readily available, this library embodies the idea of convenience with its self-service e-Kiosks, where borrowing books can be done quickly and easily. Furthermore, the on-line catalogue makes searches, renewals and reserverations of library items and even checking of library records a breeze with click-through convenience.

So, if you're still thinking of what to do during the year-end holidays, think no more! Visit this intriguing "tree house" library and you’ll experience a rich environment for learning via a journey of discovery and play!
