Poems- With Love: Valentine at the Drum

What does our school library and poetry have in common? Nearly nothing. However, on this special day of 14th February, The Drum, was filled with various voices, all dedicated to reciting poems that explored various themes of love. These included tragedy, friendship and, of course, true passion.

A number of superb recitations awed library visitors, these included “Song of Secret Love” by Han Hong Ding, “ Actualities” recited by Josephine Tan and “Porphyria’s Lover” by Zan and his literature group. There were also a number of unique performances; these included a self-penned poem by ex- NYJCian, Daniel, titled “Valentine’s Day” which mocked the increasingly commercial nature of the celebration of friendship and love. A humorous number, “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” was also sung by Miss Melissa Kwok and it did tickle the audience, sending them into stifled giggles and laughter with its humorous lyrics.

However, the attention-grabber of the session was none other than NYJC’s own principal, Mr. Kwek, who went on stage and did a recitation of Alexander Pushkin’s “I Loved You”. Needless to say, the audience was pleasantly surprised.

Here’s an interview with the principal himself:

Q: What are your thoughts regarding this special event on Valentine’s Day?

A: I think it is very good. With this event, students can get an opportunity to get together and spread the love while appreciating poetry that can enhance their values of friendship and love.

Q: What made or inspired you to recite this poem?

A: Regarding that, I was actually approached by the organizing teachers of this poem recitation event and they hoped I could support the performance. I was touched and decided to play a part in the event.

Q: Regarding your own performance, how would you rate it?

A: I personally feel I can do better (laughs) but there were time constraints and I did not have much time to practice.
