Street-Style Society recruiting new members
The Street-Style Society (SSS), a new student proposed co-curricular activity, is primarily a performing arts group emphasizing hip-hop culture, especially breakdancing. This unique new CCA aims to inject some excitement and energy into the college, as well as to promote this subculture many young Singaporeans are a part of.
In recent years, breakdancing has risen in popularity. Now it is being offered as a CCA for all regardless of gender or skill level. From hip-hop veterans to those with no background but are interested to learn, the SSS aims to bring hip hop culture to everyone.
The SSS assures students (and their parents) that safety will be an utmost priority during training sessions. Contrary to popular belief, breakdancing can be done by any ordinary individual with a reasonable level of fitness and is not truly dangerous. However, being a dynamic activity like gymnastics and judo, there is an inherent potential for mishaps. SSS will adopt similar safety measures and methods used by gymnasts, such as practicing on safety mats, implementing flexibility training and teaching the proper ways to break a fall. Safety items such as elbow and knee guards are also standard safety equipment.
Training sessions will be held in NYJC's multi-purpose room where members will train in strength and technique. The schedule has yet to be fixed and will do its best to accommodate the timetables of participants. Like the Dance society, SSS will stage performances and take part in events, such as the recently held Synergy and an upcoming hip-hop charity event (which can be counted for CIP hours) in July. All interested applicants can contact Mervyn Hi at 98184992 to join the Street-Style Society or try out a training session for the experience.
Mervyn himself views breaking as a very important dance that needs to be respected like all dances that exist today, it has vocabulary and unlimited possibilities. We need to represent the dance as best we can.
