NY AEP hosts foreign art students' visit
24 March 2006
J2 AEP (Art Elective Programme) students played hosts to art students from Brunei and Indonesia. An excursion and a workshop were organized for these foreign students who were keen to learn more about NYJC's AEP programme and how art is taught in Singapore's junior colleges.
In an activity called 'Cast Away,' the visiting students were taught how to make markings on clay. With the assistance of the AEP students, they built a relief and created textures using clay. They then poured plaster in, which when solidified, revealed striking traces of the markings. "I learnt more about the art education in other countries, such as Brunei while I was teaching one of the foreign students," said Koh Wei Lian from 05a7a.
The guests toured the college premises and viewed the art works of NYCians while learning about Singapore's AEP subject. In the process, the AEP students interacted and communicated with a variety of people, and gained deeper insights into their lives, "I definitely learnt a lot. The most important thing is I got to make new friends," declared Ng Qi Yang from 05A4A.
From the visit, the students came to realize that art does eradicate all boundaries, connecting us under a wordless language of creative expression. "It was a good exposure to the art of different cultures," Wei Lian remarked, "It is good to see that art really transcends barriers of race, language and nationality."
