Student Council Exclusive
We all know that the Student Council is made up of the most dedicated of leaders. We also know that they carry out the most arduous of tasks. However, does anyone outside the council truly know what goes on behind the scenes? As such, NYConneXions decided to take a peek behind the scenes to unravel the mystery. As a follow-up piece of the Connect and Contact Opening article last week, NYConneXions had interviewed several councilors soon after. We began with the President of the Student Council, Jamie, to share her views on the completion of the C² point.
NYCX: Why did the student council decide to set the C&C corner up?
Jamie: Connect & Contact point is a project by the 30th Student Council Welfare Committee. It aims to connect with the students and contact them by feedbacks as well as suggestions. It allows CCAs to make use of this corner to promote their CCAs as well as event.
NYCX: How is the response for the new facilities?
Jamie: I think the response for the new facilities have been quite good so far, as there have been a couple of CCAs approaching us to rent the booths. The Connect & Contact Point is available for all CCAs to use and I believe in time to come, it will be a vibrant place whereby students can make full use of it
NYCX: Do you think the students are abusing the internet kiosks or were they set up for that purpose? (Surfing YouTube and other fun sites, etc)
Jamie: The internet kiosks were set up as another avenue to allow students to give their feedback and suggestions to improve college facilities, and to enable students to get information quickly and efficiently. I personally have not come across anyone abusing it so far but I believe the students in college will not abuse the kiosk.
NYCX: Are there any upcoming projects that we can expect from the council?
Jamie: We have several projects on hand, for example the Angel & Mortal game and getting Subway to sell their sub-sandwiches in the college. We have also organised food ordering service for the Night Study Programme as well as the annual Teachers' Day Celebration. Our most recent event was ‘The Hunt’ which had taken place on 31st July.
NYCX: There was a perception that the previous student council batches follow orders/teachers instead of initiating them. How different is this student council going to be?
Jamie: The Student Council has always been about self initiating projects as well as events. There are times where teachers do ask the council to help out in events as they trust us to a certain extent. I strongly believe that each council has their own legacy. For us, we will, and are already initiating projects such as getting Subway to sell food in the college. The council still has a long way to go and there will be upcoming projects. We strongly abide by our motto: Be the best that you can be, No more, No less, No excuses.
Jamie’s responses prove, without doubt, that she is very passionate with her job. Upon further investigation, we had realised that Jamie was not the only one with piles of work. The other councillors do not have it easy at all. A common response from all of them was their sacrificial of ‘fun time’. Many of them are required to stay back for long hours to sit in meetings and carry out rehearsals for events. Can you imagine not catching your favourite series on the television? Can you imagine not having the time to simply settle down and relax? Not only is it a physical battle, in also concerns the will of the mind. What about their studies? How do they juggle it all?
However, none of them regretted their choice on being a councillor. Despite the fact that they had to give up precious hours for council activities, all of them seemed to have learnt many valuable lessons- that cannot be taught in a classroom. To them, every minute spent is worthwhile. It’s the experience that counts.
We should all be appreciative of what the councillors do for the school. Not only that, we should also be supportive of the events they have painstakingly organised. If any of you have councillor friends, be sure to encourage them and thank them for the things they have done. A simple sign of gratitude will definitely make their day much brighter.
