An interview with 31st Student Council President, Jamie

Jamie: I love NYJC!

NYX: What keeps you driven as the President of the Student Council?
Jamie: Council is very time consuming and requires a high level of commitment and the process of planning an event is very tiring and mentally straining. However, it is the sense of satisfaction and achievement that drives me even further. My love for council started since secondary school and it has never ended! Besides, I’ve seen the 30th Student Council put in their all in every event they plan and they try their best to make every NYJC-ian feel at home. I hope that we as the 31st will be able to achieve that and bring everyone together.

NYX: How do you feel now, carrying heavy responsibilities on your shoulders as President of the Student Council?
Jamie: Well, there are many mixed emotions about it! Firstly, there certainly will be a certain amount of stress as people, be it teachers or peers, recognize you everywhere you go, and whatever small action you take makes a difference. It is as though one cannot afford to make a simple mistake or it’ll escalate to heavier consequences. However, I feel encouraged every time I see my fellow members smiling at one another, having small talks, and coming together to have a simple dinner. I also feel motivated when I meet up with my seniors from the 30th Student Council, I certainly do not want to let them down!

NYX: Do you think you are capable of handling the workload of school assignments while remaining committed to the Student Council at the same time?
Jamie: Yes! I believe I am capable of handling the heavy workload. Before taking up this post, I thought about it long and hard and I know my own limits. With experience, I believe I will be able to cope.

NYX: If you had not been able to get the post of President, how then would you try and aid the other person who might have gotten it instead?
Jamie: I would give the person all the support he/she needs and try to my best capabilities to complete all the tasks I’m given, and participate actively in planning and discussions, provide my opinions to help make the 31st council a better one, and most importantly, constantly encourage him/her.

NYX: Some students felt that the speeches that the Presidential candidates gave during the elections were superficial and insincere; do you think you were sincere in your speech and will hold true to your word about accomplishing what you might have claimed you would?
Jamie: Hmm, I believe whether or not I am sincere depends on the audience but personally, I believe that I have tried my best and yes, I will hold true to my word and put in everything that I have for the 31st and bring it to greater heights!

NYX: Do you love NYJC?
Jamie: Yes, I do love NYJC! Being in Nanyang really makes me feel at home and comfortable. Stepping into school always makes me happy because I get to meet my friends, classmates, 31st council elects! I have never regretted my choice of NYJC because I truly love and feel for the school.
