NY parties at Dragonfly
On 28 May, the college organized an appreciation tea party for the various CCAs that brought honours in sports and cultural events this year. It was an alcohol-free, smoke-free, dance-your-brains-out afternoon at Dragonfly, St James' Power Station.
The tea party was hosted by the Peoples' Association so for the first hour, 2 of their representatives held a chat session, fielding questions on whatever socio-political concerns the students had with regard to life in Singapore, and life in general. Students texted in their questions to a common mobile phone held by one of the PA reps, and together they advised the crowd on issues relating to Education, the rich-poor divide, community involvement, family, and so on.
Beyond the dialogue, the MC took about 45 minutes in an attempt to get some audience participation in an activity he appeared to be devising on the spot. He pulled various staff and students up onstage to make them sing or dance or otherwise display some talent, but the chosen were neither cooperative nor entertaining, and kept refusing all offers.
When he eventually released everyone from the stage and started the music, the dance floor was immediately swarmed. There was no more holding back the party as students and even several staff -- and Mr Kwek himself -- grooved to the beat and danced the afternoon away.
