A New Year of special significance

This year, the hard work and preparations of the staff and students for the Chinese New Year celebrations was paid off during the one-hour event. Once the performances in the hall kicked off, the festive cheer soon spread throughout the campus.

Members of the piano ensemble skillfully performed melodious tunes suited for the occasion, while the Pugilistic Society concluded the diverse host of performances with a loud and impressive drumming session.

Performing groups such as the band and choir took a break from this performance. ‘As it is the SYF year, I didn’t want to involve the SYF groups who are already busy,’ explained Ms Lim Jong Yann, the coordinator for the event. ‘Instead, I approached the other groups, who rose to the occasion and kindly rendered their services.’

In addition to the student performers, tutors from the Chinese Department crooned a series of popular New Year songs. Of all the performances, the one by the Malay Cultural Society probably stood out the most. Besides being a crowd favourite, their graceful dance item highlighted the idea of a multicultural society where different races share joyous occasions together.

Also of special significance was the presentation of the college’s 30th anniversary logo, which consists of a colourful wave, signifying dynamism and vitality, going through a circle and into a new space, symbolic of NYJC's entry into a new era.

The celebrations ended on a more somber note, with the Principal's address.

‘As the new year starts, reflect on your life,’ Mr Kwek urged all students. ‘Only then can you realize the meaning of life and gain your maturity.’
